For a long time, mental health has been a topic people avoid discussing, especially in academia. People sometimes feel ashamed or scared to talk about their mental health, fearing that it might affect their jobs or studies. However, we should encourage open conversations about this topic to reduce the stigma and give everyone the support they desperately need.

A recent study has shown that about one-third of Ph.D. students experience symptoms of depression, anxiety or suicidal thoughts. Despite this, universities often don't provide enough mental health services for students who need it. It can be even more challenging for academics, who may also be struggling with mental health issues but feel the need to keep it to themselves.

The story of one college professor demonstrates how challenging this can be. After losing a teaching job due to their mental health struggles, they started working on a project to create more awareness about this subject. Their project is called the 'Mental Health in Higher Ed' and aims to provide a platform where academics can openly discuss their experiences about mental health.

What can we do to change this? First, universities should start providing more mental health services to their students. They should also train their staff, so they're better equipped to help the students. Additionally, academics should also be allowed to talk about their mental health experiences without fear of retribution.

By breaking the stigma around mental health in higher education, we can create a safer, more supportive environment for everyone.
